I pass the landing on the stairs many times during the day, every time I nod to the oak tree on the hill. I have witnessed the change in colour as the tree comes into leaf. This year it took a long time and then over two or three days the colour was there. The ground is still russet, it is just about to catch up.
The duality of place, how to incorporate this within the work I would like to make? Two locations, looking closely where I am and thinking about the other. A starting point for research is language, what words do we have for ‘oak’? ‘Duir’ in South Devonian, ‘dair’ or ‘darag’ in Scottish Gaelic, ‘quercus’ in Latin. There is also the river, The Dart, meaning ‘the oaks’. The river flows through the landscape with oak trees lining the banks, the significance cements my idea.
